What is Sustainability?

The County of Oxford embraces sustainability as a lens to create an integrated and effective approach to addressing challenges, including economic and social inequities, human health, ecosystem decline and sustainable community development.

The figure below illustrates the economic, social and ecological dimensions. This concept of sustainability contrasts with the three legs of the stool approach, which was based on the premise that the social, ecological and economic legs were equally important. The nested circle framework recognizes that social and economic activity occurs within ecological limits.

Oxford County’s Strategic Plan directly captures the conception of sustainability in strategic direction:

3.iii.A County that Thinks Ahead and Wisely Shapes the Future

Apply social, financial and environmental sustainability lenses to significant decisions by assessing options in regard to potential impacts to the vulnerable population in our community, life cycle costs and benefits/costs, including debt, tax, and reserve levels and implications, and responsible environmental stewardship.
