Chih C. Chao, Ph.D. P.Eng.

Dr. Chih C. Chao is principal of Cantech Environmental Services, specializing in strategic planning and advisory assistance to sustainability-related projects worldwide. Prior to this, he was a Professor of Chemical and Materials Engineering and Vice President at Tunghai University, Taiwan.

Trained as a chemical and environmental engineer, Dr. Chao has a grave concern over the social and environmental impacts that are caused by un-thoughtful economic activities. Most recently, he has worked with natural and social scientists to search for and implement feasible approaches that will lead to the establishment of sustainable low-carbon circular economic systems. 

Dr. Chao has more than 40 years’ experience in North America, EU and Asia, covering a wide spectrum of sustainability driven issues, such as: green technology development and application, integrated waste/resource management, value-added waste/resource recycling, cleaner production, eco-industrial network development and implementation, cross-disciplinary global research, etc.

Milfred Hammerbacher is Co-Founder and CEO of s2e Technologies Inc., which is partnering with Sifton Properties to create the largest SMART community in North America in London, Ontario. With more 26 years of photovoltaic experience and proven leadership in technology, manufacturing and business development, Milfred excels at navigating cultural sensitivities and regional business practices that generate positive outcomes for clients and the markets they serve.

Recently, Milfred completed a three-year assignment as President of Canadian Solar Solutions for the Canadian market as well as Global Project Development. His past roles include President of SSP Inc. and Assistant General Manager of Photowatt International in France, where he was responsible for managing the manufacturing and technology development for what was then the largest solar manufacturer in Europe. Milfred has B.S. and M.S degrees in Physics from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, 1979 and 1981, respectively.

Douglas M. Yates

Director, Environment and Energy
General Motors of Canada Company

Doug Yates began his career with General Motors of Canada in St. Catharines and has gained extensive and broad experience in environmental engineering and management, sustainability, and energy management throughout his 30+ year career with General Motors.  Doug has worked for General Motors in St. Catharines, Oshawa, Pontiac, Michigan, Warren, Michigan, and in Rüsselsheim, Germany.  Doug was appointed to his current position as Director, Environmental and Energy for GM Canada in May 2014.

Doug holds a Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from the University of Waterloo, and Master of Civil Engineering degrees from Waterloo and McMaster Universities.  He is registered Professional Engineer in Ontario.  Doug is on the Board of Directors for the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce, and is also on the Board of Directors for the Association of Major Power Consumers in Ontario.
