Future Oxford encourages citizens to vote on October 21

“Beyond the ballot” campaign aims to increase voter turnout in Oxford for the 2019 federal election

Future Oxford launched a new campaign today encouraging local citizens to vote in the upcoming federal election as part of its goal to increase voter turnout in Oxford County. Federal elections will be held across Canada on October 21, 2019.

The social media campaign invites the public to learn more about the candidates in our community and how their platforms will affect the future “beyond the ballot box.” It includes links to information about voting and why your vote matters, using the hashtag #beyondtheballotbox.

Promoting democratic engagement is a vital component of community wellbeing and was highlighted in the 2016 Oxford County Community Wellbeing Survey.

The most recent federal election in October 2015 saw more than two-thirds of eligible voters in Oxford County (67.9%) come out to vote, which is a similar turnout to other areas across the country (68.3%). However, local voter turnout in the last provincial election was much lower with slightly more than half of residents (51.9%) voting for their MPPs. Voter turnout in Oxford County for the last municipal election was only about one-third of eligible voters (37.6%).

Future Oxford hosted all-candidates forums for youth and initiated a social media campaign last fall to encourage voter turnout for 2018 municipal election.

Additional information about voter turnout in Oxford County can be found in the 2018 report A Profile of Wellbeing in Oxford County with comparisons to Ontario and Canada.
