Celebrating Waste Reduction Week in Oxford County

Oxford County and the Future Oxford Zero Waste Committee are promoting Waste Reduction Week in Canada during the third week of October. Waste Reduction Week takes place during October’s Circular Economy Month in Canada, a public awareness month dedicated to educating and engaging Canadians on building a circular economy, celebrating their environmental efforts and achievements, and encouraging new innovative ideas and solutions in reducing waste.

Oxford County is using Waste Reduction Week to raise awareness of its various depots and diversion programs for film plastics, clothing, bulk Styrofoam, scrap metal, household hazardous waste, electronic waste, tires, leaf and yard waste, agricultural plastics, and construction and demolition waste. During Waste Reduction Week, Oxford County and Future Oxford are helping to promote waste reduction practices through a series of daily blogs at www.oxfordcounty.ca that follow the themes of the national campaign:

Monday, October 16
Circular Economy Innovators Monday – The first blog will introduce Waste Reduction Week, what it is, and why it’s important, while also highlighting local business and organization innovators taking part in Future Oxford’s Zero Waste Spaces.

Tuesday, October 17
Textiles Tuesday – Tuesday’s blog will look at textile recycling, what it is, acceptable materials, and ways to avoid sending old clothing to the landfill.

Wednesday, October 18
E-Waste Wednesday – Wednesday's blog is all about electronic waste, where to take it and recycling innovation.

Thursday, October 19
Plastics Thursday – Thursday's blog will look at the harm single-use plastics are causing and promote the film plastic diversion depot locations in Oxford County.

Friday, October 20
Food Waste Friday – This blog will examine ways to reduce food waste through composting. We will even share a recipe or two that showcases ways to use foods that might otherwise be thrown away.We’ll also share information about Oxford’s very own Great Pumpkin Rescue.
