The countdown is on: Future Oxford Expo returns April 20


Oxford's sustainability showcase will include keynote speakers, a marketplace and an atonomous electric vehicle (EV) demonstration


The second annual Future Oxford Expo returns to the Oxford Auditorium on April 20, with an exciting opportunity to learn more about sustainable initiatives in Oxford, while getting a glimpse of what the future has in store.

The day-long event is free to attend and will feature diverse and exciting exhibitors, engaging speakers, demonstrations, electric vehicles and much more. Doors open to the public at 9:00 a.m. with the agenda for the day is as follows:

9:00 a.m.      Opening address and announcements by Future Oxford Partnership Chair Chris Friesen

10:00 a.m.   Address by Milfred Hammerbacher, Co-Founder, and CEO of
s2e Technologies Inc., who will speak about sustainable communities and progress on London West 5, s2e’s partnership with Sifton to create the largest SMART community in North America

11:15 a.m.   Address by Doug Yates, Director, Environment & Energy, GM Canada, who will discuss GM’s goal of 100% renewable energy across all manufacturing facilities by 2050

1:00 p.m.    Address by Chih-Cheng Chao, Principal, Cantech Environmental Services, whose focus is on zero waste goals and the sustainability impacts of “un-thoughtful” economic activities

TBD    Community Futures Oxford Student Competition

New features this year include a multi-vendor Expo marketplace, a green vehicle parking lot, and the Community Futures Oxford Student Competition, which will see local students pitching their sustainability ideas in a “Dragon’s Den”-styled competition on the main stage at the Expo.

Joining the green vehicle lot will be an ecoRIDES Tesla Model S equipped with self-driving technology. ecoRIDES will be providing the public with a demonstration of the “Summon” technology and rides in the luxurious EV. Other EV and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles will be on display on April 20 in the green vehicle lot at the Expo.

Once again, this year’s Expo is being planned as a “zero waste” event through the use of recycled and recyclable material, the use of dishes over disposable ware, and a request for visitors to carry out any waste they bring with them. Event programs, printed by Spot Marketing Group on recycled paper using vegetable inks, will be reused as contest entry forms and recycled after the Expo.

The Future Oxford Expo is the showcase event for theFuture Oxford Community Sustainability Plan, which sets out the community’s vision for how we will manage human (community), natural (environmental) and financial (economic) resources for Oxford County’s future growth and wellbeing. The final draft Plan, which can be viewed atFutureOxford.ca, sets out 70 distinct actions including:

  • reducing the percentage of Oxford County residents living in poverty;
  • increasing the number of residents with post-secondary education;
  • increasing participation in arts, recreation, and culture activities;
  • growing jobs relative to population growth;
  • encouraging production and consumption of locally produced food and products;
  • achieving zero waste in Oxford County; and
  • achieving 100% renewable energyby 2050.
